Numerology Compatibility for Marriage: A Traditional Perspective
Alongside the traditional 11-Porutham horoscope compatibility system, Matrimony.fr offers an optional numerology compatibility feature. This article explains what it is, how it's calculated, and — importantly — what it is not.
What numerology looks at
Our numerology feature calculates two numbers from a birth date:
- Life Path Number — found by adding together every digit of the full birth date and reducing the result to a single digit (with certain "master numbers" kept as-is, following a common Western numerology convention).
- Birth Number — derived from the day of the month you were born, reduced the same way.
When comparing two people, we look at how their Life Path Numbers relate to each other using a simple, clearly documented compatibility method: an exact match is considered highly compatible, certain complementary number pairs are considered good, and so on.
An important distinction: tradition, not science
We want to be completely upfront about this: numerology is a traditional, belief-based practice. It is not scientifically validated, and Matrimony.fr does not claim otherwise. We offer it because many members find cultural and traditional compatibility signals meaningful alongside horoscope matching — not because we believe it predicts the success of a marriage.
This is exactly why we keep it completely separate from our 11-Porutham horoscope engine: the two use entirely different methods, are calculated independently, and are never mixed into a single score. Your Porutham compatibility percentage always means exactly what it has always meant.
Why we version our method
Numerology calculation conventions vary between traditions and practitioners. To stay transparent, our numerology engine is versioned (currently "v1") — if we ever refine the method, results will clearly reflect which version calculated them, so nothing is silently changed after the fact.
How to see it
If enabled by the administrator, your numerology comparison appears on the compatibility page alongside (but separate from) your Porutham results. It is always shown with a plain-language disclaimer, exactly like this article: interesting cultural context, not a scientific verdict.
Our recommendation
Use numerology, like horoscope compatibility, as one thread of a much larger conversation — alongside family values, life goals, education, and the qualities that matter most to you and your family. No single signal, traditional or otherwise, should be the sole basis for a marriage decision.
